Thoughts About Stuff is really just thoughts about nothing. We just didn't want to call it Thoughts About Nothing because then no one would show up.

Thoughts About The World Without Us

I knocked History Channel’s program called Life After People in an earlier post. And though I still haven’t seen it, I take back what I said. After reading The World Without Us, I now get it and rescind my comments.

The thing I take away from the book is that there’s a group of people who believe it’s time for the human race to stop procreating so that we, collectively, may die letting Mother Earth return to a state of environmental harmony. They believe also that in doing this, humans will realize that because they’re the last generation, they’ll finally begin to be peaceful and take time to appreciate life.

They’ve obviously never seen Children of Men. That is how we’re going down. Not in a whimper.

Thoughts About Books, Broadway and Film

There’s not a lot of originality left in Hollywood. Movies used to be original. Then started made sequels. Then spin-offs. Then they were based off books (and short stories, sometimes poems). Then they were remakes of old movies. Then they were based off movies from a long time ago (but revamped for the current times). Then they were based off foreign movies. Then they were based off toys. Then they were based off rides. Then they were based off board games.

Bottom line is, movies kind of suck nowadays.

So whenever someone says, “I saw Les Miserables (with Liam Neeson) last night and it was good,” it’s natural that the (snob) friend will reply with, “Yeah, but I like the book better.”

OK. Fair enough. The book was, after all, thicker than the Bible. So the 2 hour movie was bound to leave something out.

But whenever someone says, “I saw Les Miserables on broadway last night and it was good,” the (snob) friend never says, “Yeah, but I like the book better.” Never. Despite the fact that all the dialouge in Les Miserables (book) is not sung. But still.

So to make things easier, here’s a chart to help you know what everybody’s thinking about Les Miserables:

Les Miserables Chart

The book is better than the movie. Naturally.
But the movie is more convenient and less expensive to watch compared to the broadway.
But the broadway is always more interesting to talk about than talking about the book to your peers.
